I’m in Nebraska

I am currently in Nebraska, and appearing at several venues.  This last weekend I appeared at The Bookworm in Omaha, at the R Bar in Homer, where Two Gun worked, and in Sioux City, where Al had a branch of his operations and where Two Gun also operated.  This weekend I’ll be at A Novel Idea on Saturday, and the Walt Branch Library on Sunday.  I’ll also stick around one more week because the following Sunday is Mother’s Day, and I should hang out with her, and probably spend time with friends.

I was going to stay a whole month because I was going to fly into San Francisco to do a tour there.  However, though several bookstores told me they were interested in talking to me about appearing at their stores, not one ever got back to me about actually doing it.  Also, no news sources showed any interest, so it was quickly turning into a wasted trip.  At the same time, things have been heating up back in Burbank where I need to get a lot done, including Command Combat Battle Reports, which is a whole different story.

Two Gun Hart: Lawman, Cowboy, and Long-Lost Brother of Al Capone Releases Today

Today is a big day for me.  Two Gun Hart: Lawman, Cowboy, and Long-Lost Brother of Al Capone at last releases to the public.  I have been working on this story since 2008, a seven year journey.  I was lucky enough to be trusted enough by the Hart Capone family to tell the story of this incredible and brave man.  I have been honored by their willingness to let me in on the details of their family's history.  As a result of their aid, this book tells more about the Capones than any book before it.

Two Gun Hart is available on Amazon and Barnes & Noble, as well as all e-readers.  It can also be ordered at any bookstore.

Pre-Sales Phase

I have now been in phase 2 for almost a month.  This is the phase where I try to get people to purchase the book through pre-order.  This is a difficult task as people have to pay for something they don’t get right away; something I don’t like to do, let alone people in today’s instant gratification society.  I would normally agree with them and not bother with pre-orders, but, as I mentioned in my last entry, all sales in pre-orders go toward one day, and are more likely to put you in the bestseller list.

This isn’t so much of a prestige issue as it is a practical one.  Books on top 10 lists typically get far more sales.  Plus, when mixed with the fact that a lot of people are talking about the subject when it releases, others who then see it in the top 10 list feel like they have a history with it, and are more likely to buy.

So the way I go about achieving this goal is by appearing on as many media outlets as I can.  I made a huge list of radio, television, and newspaper locations, focusing primarily in Nebraska, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, and Austin.  (I’ll probably add Florida to that, now that I think about it.)  I’m sending out a general press release, then emailing them afterward so they hear about it through the release, then are reminded through the email.

This book in particular plays well to this specific type of promotion, as it’s a very newsworthy story.  A long-lost Capone hardly anyone knew about has finally been discovered, and he was one of the most successful lawmen in the country.  Headlines mean the most in this step.  I want to attract the producers and editors first so they’ll have me on their show.  Then the public will hear me.

I’m following this up with sending bits of information to bloggers and podcasters to get them to pick up something about the story.  During the first part of this phase, it’s less important for people to see where my book is available to buy, and more important for them to learn that the story exists.  If everything goes as planned, they’ll have heard about the real person so much that by the time they see the pre-order, they’re already sold on purchasing it.

Getting Reviews in Newspapers

Once again, I was going to do a blog about press releases, but I just learned today that my book The Great Heist got a wonderful review in the newspaper, so I'm going to talk a little about newspaper reviews.

Many people say that newspapers are going out of fashion, and will be gone soon.  I disagree.  In fact, I believe they are one of the four best resources for writers.  (The others are radio stations, blogs, and podcasts.)  Though they have lost a lot of revenue over the past couple decades, and their staffs have unfortunately declined significantly, they are still relevant with a certain audience.  More importantly, they still have ways to survive.

The problem is when people equate newspapers with news print.  The assumption is that as the print medium dies, so do newspapers.  Not true; and the smart newspapers have been adjusting, getting onto the web, and creating apps for their product.  Just as heralding news on the streets was replaced by the printing press, so, too, has the printing press been replaced by computers and, to a larger degree, tablets.  It's the natural progression, and there's no reason anyone should be left behind as it's simply a different method of distribution; the content doesn't really need to change, (except perhaps for some adding of interactivity.)

The problem for the newspapers is financing.  Once purchased by millions of people, it has reduced to a tiny percentage of that amount due to the internet.  Television and radio reduced the readership as they came along, but this most recent threat was bigger because it approached the same audience: readers.  While TV and radio attracted people to watch and listen to the news, newspapers retained readership; people who prefer to read for themselves about what's happening rather than having it filtered through the emotions of telecasters or radio personalities.

That's how I get to my point.  Though newspapers and blogs may have a lower readership than television and Youtube, they retain the audience that is most important, readers.  Independent book selling is really more about selling to niches than it is about going for the mainstream audience.  Even if your book will appeal to a mainstream audience, you want a niche audience to start out with.  You want them to feel special, like they have a beautiful secret before anyone else.  Then utilize that base to launch off into a wider audience.  Newspapers have that loyalty, and a reader who cares about a newspaper, (or a blog,) will care more deeply about what they say, and are more likely to read a review or a story from them.

My books have thus far been a lot about Nebraska history, and I plan to do some more fairly soon.  I've therefore become acquainted with the people in charge of book reviews at The Lincoln Journal Star and the Omaha Reader.  (I have not been impressed with the Omaha World Herald.)  I've sent them stories and free copies of the books every time they've come out, and I've shown gratitude every time they do a story or a review.  I also see what's going on in town before sending them things so I can refer to current events, and talk about how these stories will be relevant.  As such, I've gotten both reviews, and regular stories written about my books and their subjects.

Once I have that base, I branch out from there into blogs, podcasts, radio stations and newspapers around the country.  But having that base from a couple local newspapers helps tremendously, as I'm able to show others that first review, that first story, and how well it went over with their readers.

Amazon's Kindle Countdown Deal for The Great Heist

I am trying out the new KDP Select Countdown Deal for my book The Great Heist - The Story of the Biggest Bank Robbery in History.  It starts out for 99 cents today, goes up to 1.99 tomorrow, and rises every day by one dollar until it's back to full price at the end of the weekend.

I've started this sale the day before Thanksgiving and will be running it through the weekend.  I know this is risky because I'm competing with all the madness of Black Friday and other holiday events.  However, my idea is to catch people as they are traveling.  The day before Thanksgiving is the biggest travel day of the year, and the weekend is equally busy, so my hope is that people will buy it to read on planes, road trips, etc.  I wanted to start it the weekend before Thanksgiving, but Amazon has this crazy concept where the writer must place this promotion a certain number of days after they start on KDP.  I don't understand why this is, and it seems only to hurt, as it has in my case so far.

Hopefully, though, this will not cause an ongoing problem, and it will sell to people wanting to read on their long travels.  I'll give an update after it's done to explain how it went.
